Eskom and energy and chemical business, Sasol, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to "collaboratively explore and investigate prospective potential liquified natural gas (LNG) requirements".

This can be according to a joint statement by the two corporations, following the signing ceremony of the MoU on Friday.

"The collaboration aims to determine the possible volumes that South Africa demands to determine a viable LNG import sector, combined with the enabling infrastructure, and will be facilitated by government-to-governing administration relations wherever needed."

"This initiative focuses on working with gas for electric power generation to deliver crucial base load electricity and position gas for a important enabler of re-industrialisation, when also ensuring continued supply to the marketplace by unlocking world LNG resources.

"Furthermore, the collaboration will contribute to enhancing South Africa’s energy mix and enable the country's energy transition and decarbonisation," the joint statement read.
